Politicians must recognize that not all drug use is problematic. They should also decriminalize the possession of small amounts of illegal drugs. It is said in a report by an independent advisory committee, consisting of leading scientists, police officers and academics. The UK Drug Policy Commission concludes after an extensive study that the current policy has little impact on drug use and in some cases even worse. People who grow cannabis for personal use should get only minimal sanctions.

Rarely acknowledged
The report emphasized that the researchers thinks that drugs like heroin and cocaine should remain illegal. "Drug use is not always caused problems, but this is rarely recognized by policymakers," they concluded. "Most users experience no major problems and there is even evidence that this drug can bring advantages in certain circumstances."

Dependence
The UKDPC proposes a radical revision of the drugs so "we can create an environment which is aimed at reducing the dependence on drugs and protecting the community." According to the commission, the British government invests remarkably little on independent evaluations of drugs. This must change, as the committee deems, so effective measures can cabe introduced in the future.
